The Scooter Incident

I do not like to shop. In fact, it is a chore I absolutely hate to do. If I can con anyone into going to get groceries for me, I do it. I do almost all of our Christmas shopping online. But, occasionally, I have to go to the store myself, which doesn’t put me in a pleasant mood. And, if my back is bothering me, then walking through the larger stores is very painful, in more ways than one!

It was about a year ago when I had one of those nightmarish days, trying to meet a deadline and get ready to have guests. I needed too much stuff from the store to trust sending my husband, Larry. Lar doesn’t like to shop, either, but instead of simply staying home and permitting me to go and get it done, he thinks he needs to ‘help’. His idea of helping me shop is to question each item I put into my basket. I’m sure you all know what I mean. “What do you need that for? This one is cheaper, JoAnn! You aren’t going to fix that, are you?” Then I always have to hear how his mother didn’t buy this or that. He never appreciates any of my responses to those statements, so you would think he wouldn’t give me such great openings to make them!

It was already late evening when we left the house to go to our local Wal–Mart. I don’t normally like to buy my groceries there, but since I had a chauffeur, I knew that he wasn’t going to drive to two or three stores for me to pick up the items I needed. I decided to simply take advantage of one–stop shopping convenience for that one evening. Lar kindly dropped me off at the door and told me to go ahead and he would find me after he parked the car. I know this sounds like a kindness, but I honestly think he does it so he can pretend he can’t remember where he parked and drive me crazy. This is his idea of funny.

My back was aching, and so were my feet. I’d been on them all day cleaning. Our Wal–Mart is huge. I decided to drive a scooter cart with the basket in the front. If I had been thinking clearly I never ever would have parked my fanny on the darn thing. Lar caught up with me before I even reached the produce, which is at the front of the grocery section. He started grilling me.

“What the heck are you doing on that thing?”

I explained. Did I get any sympathy? No. He started teasing, and while I do have a pretty good sense of humor and the ability to laugh at myself, it hadn’t been a good day. I was tired, grumpy, and after a few comments from Lar, I had had my fill. I let that be known, rather sharply.
